The Fly Shop® is excited to offer a 3 Day Spey School on the Klamath River at Gold River Lodge.  Chris King, FFI Master and Two Handed Certified Instructor, will lead the instruction that will take you through basic Spey Casting principles to fishing with the two handed rod.  Instruction will include Double and Single Spey Casts, Snap T, Snake Roll, and helpful techniques such as the Perry Poke. Also included will be workshops and discussion on Spey Equipment and Applications, Reading Water and Fishing applications.

Each instruction packed lesson builds on the previous session, preparing both beginning and intermediate anglers for just about any Spey fishing situation, from Alaska to Argentina and everything in between.

Expert instructors are on hand to guide students through the course, and our high teacher-student ratio ensures a comfortable and personal atmosphere, with plenty of individual time and attention. An abundance of material is presented during the school and the practice sessions and lessons are presented in a fun and relaxed fashion – on the water.

The school is held at Gold River Lodge, on the estuary of the Klamath River, and is located in the center of coastal steelhead country.  August and September are historically one of the best times to get out on the Klamath River with good returns of feisty half-pounders providing lots of action on the swung fly.  Every steelhead returning to The Scott, New, Shasta, Salmon and Trinity Rivers passes directly in front of Gold River Lodge’s doorstep giving you the chance to be the first to put a fly in front of these anadromous fish.  The broad, long riffles and gravel bars of the Lower Klamath are easy to wade making this the finest Spey classroom available anywhere.

Getting to Gold River Lodge

The terms "remote", "wild" and "solitude" are not usually the first to come to mind when someone talks of outdoor recreation in California. The reality is that, tucked away in the north western most part of the state, few places in the lower 48 are as remote, wild and solitary is what you will find at the Gold River Lodge on the Lower Klamath River.

Due to the remoteness of the lodge, getting there is another enjoyable aspect of your trip. The drive up 101 along the rugged lost coast is an

attraction all its own, with beautiful views and unique coastal communities dotting the map along the way. The closest municipal airports are located in Brookings, OR (45 min north) or Mckinleyville, CA (45 minutes south). These are not major airports, so finding flights may be tricky. Flying into Redding, Sacramento or Medford, renting a car and enjoying the drive is preferred by most.

From Medford (2.5 hours): • Follow I-5 N, US-199 S/Redwood Hwy and US-101 S
