The Appeal of Private Waters: Why Anglers Choose Us Year After Year

by Bryan Quick & Jordan Taylor

At The Fly Shop®, we understand that finding the “perfect” fishing spot can be challenging, especially when it comes to navigating the crowded, over-pressured public waters. Many anglers call us at the last minute – “Hey, I’m thinking about heading to the McCloud for the weekend. What’s it like?” Often, these conversations turn into discussions about how crowded the stream or lake might be, whether it’s fishing well, and if it’s suitable for beginners. With the growing popularity of fly fishing, we can all agree that public waters are under more and more pressure, making it harder to find those quiet, pristine spots.

Battle Creek Ranch GroupThis is where our Private Waters program comes in. Established nearly 30 years ago, the program was created to provide exclusive access to under-fished, tranquil locations, allowing anglers to enjoy their time on the water without the hustle and bustle of public fishing spots.  All of these private fisheries were opened by us, not closed.  These properties had been behind locked gates for years prior to us working with owners to open them.  Some of these venues have come and gone, but we continue to offer some of the best spots to fish, relax, or simply enjoy the outdoors. While private waters might not appeal to every angler, we’ve compiled a list of reasons why so many return year after year.

  1. Solitude: The Luxury of Peace and Quiet

When it comes to finding that perfect spot to fish, one of the most sought-after qualities is solitude. Public waters—especially the popular ones—are under immense pressure, particularly during peak times. With social media and forums providing easy access to location information, even the most remote spots can quickly become overcrowded. This is where we shine. We offer guaranteed exclusive access to our private waters, limiting the pressure on each location.

Take Battle Creek Ranch, for example. With nearly seven miles of stream, exclusively owned on both sides, you won’t have to worry about competing for the best fishing spot. With only The Fly Shop® and the property owners having access to the gate combination, you’re virtually guaranteed solitude. Whether you want to enjoy a peaceful day on the water or avoid the crowds, our private waters are the perfect retreat.

  1. Great Fishing for Beginners

Antelope Creek RanchFly fishing isn’t always easy, and not every angler is born with the skills to cast a perfect fly. However, fishing with willing fish is a great way to get beginning anglers hooked, and we pride ourselves on making sure our private waters offer just that. For beginners or those looking to introduce others to the sport, Antelope Creek Ranch is an excellent choice. With nearly two miles of private stream and two well-stocked mill ponds, the action is nonstop, and the fish are abundant.

As Duane Milleman, the father of our Private Waters program, often said, “No one remembers catching a ten-inch rainbow.” That’s why we make sure our private waters, like Antelope Creek, are stocked with healthy, large fish. This venue is also home to our Fly Fishing Schools and Kid’s Camps, providing the ideal setting for learning the ropes with expert instruction in a relaxed, low-pressure environment.

  1. Exclusive Access to Unique Streams & Lakes

With special access to hidden gems like Clear Creek Ranch near French Gulch, Bollibokka on the McCloud River with nearly eight miles of river access, and a secluded cabin on Rock Creek Lake, you’ll find yourself completely alone, enjoying the best that nature has to offer.

Whether it’s fishing pristine, untouched streams or relaxing by a quiet lake, these exclusive locations offer a unique experience that simply cannot be replicated on public access waters.

  1. Ease of Access

Rock Creek Lake Chris Corbett LaunchWe understand that convenience is key, especially when you want to make the most of your time on the water which is why all our locations have been carefully chosen for their ease of use. With the exception of Battle Creek Ranch, our private waters are easy to access regardless if you are staying on-site, or coming in from the nearest highway. If you want to hook fish five minutes after throwing your rig in park, Luk Lake is a great option.  And Clear Creek Ranch has cabins only a stone’s throw away from the creek.  And you can literally sit on the patio in front of the ranch house on Antelope and observe sipping rainbows. Whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway or a longer, more immersive experience, our private waters are designed to make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

  1. Great Places to Hang Out with Family & Friends

Fishing isn’t just about the catch—it’s about the experience. Our Private Waters offer more than just great fishing, they provide a perfect setting for spending quality time with friends and family. Whether you’re relaxing by the water, sharing stories over dinner, or enjoying a picnic on the banks, these locations are designed to foster connections and create lasting memories. For those who want to combine fishing with relaxation, our private venues are perfect for unwinding in nature without the distractions of crowded public spots.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler looking for a peaceful place to cast your line or a beginner seeking a hassle-free experience, our Private Waters program offers something for everyone. With exclusive access, great fishing, and the luxury of solitude, it’s no wonder our guests return year after year.
