Endless hard sand flats, remarkable numbers of cruising bonefish and trevally, and consistent year round weather await all who visit this remarkable atoll.

Whether you are an experienced saltwater angler returning for your tenth trip or a novice keen on honing your flats fishing skills, you’ll find the ultimate in flats wade-fishing at Christmas Island Outfitters. With some of the best guides of the island and the need to cater to smaller groups of anglers (12 maximum at the lodge), Christmas Island Outfitters formed a few years ago and has grown in popularity so much that it is hard to find space there during the winter months unless reservations are made way ahead of time. They brag about fishing according to the tides and conditions instead of meal schedules.

One of the great things about Christmas Island is its proximity to the equator. It is the same weather today as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow. This makes it an outstanding destination during the winter when the Bahamas or the Yucatan might get some cold fronts moving across the flats, putting the fish off for a while. A missed day of fishing at Christmas Island because of weather is almost unheard of at any time of year. Several people every year combine a trip to Christmas Island with an add-on vacation in Hawaii.

Seasons at Christmas Island Outfitters

The best time of year to fish Christmas Island is whenever you can be there!

Christmas Island is located about 1200 miles south of Hawaii and only 110 miles north of the Equator. It's proximity to the equator guarantees consistent conditions throughout the year, making it one of the few

fishing destinations in the world that provides great opportunities nearly every day of the year.

There is no bad time of year to fish Christmas Island. Some of the most popular months are in the wintertime -- November through February -- when many other international destinations are cold and negatively impacted by winter weather conditions.

Getting to Christmas Island Outfitters

We strongly recommend using the services of our professional travel agent in Honolulu: Renee Mahler. She is the best resource for reservations between Honolulu and Christmas Island (Cassidy International Airport, code CXI). She is very familiar with this flight and will take good care of you. Moreover, if there are ever any travel delays related to either the charter flight to Fanning or the commercial flight on Fiji Airways to/from Hawaii (or Fiji), she will be able to assist you in any rebookings needed to get you home. While these sorts of delays are rare, they do happen. This is also another very good reason to purchase Travel Insurance for this trip.

Renee can be reached 1-808-949-8100 (ext 103#) or renee@ultimatevacations.us. Tell her that you are with The Fly Shop, and she’ll take extra special care of you.

The round trip via Fiji Airways flight between Christmas Island (or Fiji) and Honolulu costs approximately US$1140. Fiji Airways is a well-operated airline and provides good service; Renee can almost always get our guests great seats; wine and beer are complimentary; and a small meal is provided.

Renee can also make flight reservations from the mainland for you as well as make hotel arrangements in Hawaii, or Fiji. Most of our guests choose to stay at the Airport Honolulu Hotel (formerly known as the Ohana), particularly if spending only one night. The hotel restaurant has a decent breakfast. Dinners there are decent, and there are several good restaurants within walking distance. It is often worth the $30 cab ride (one way) to Waikiki for better dining options (Duke’s is one of our favorite restaurants, right on Waikiki Beach). The Pearl Ridge Shopping Center is nearby and reachable by taxi if you need any last-minute items.

You need to purchase Medical evacuation insurance. If anything happens to you while on Christmas Island and an evacuation to a medical facility is necessary, it is very, VERY, expensive should you have to do it without insurance. Check the Sportsman's Travel Protection Plan by Travel Guard brochure enclosed (or attached if you receive this by email) for information.

Passports must be valid for at least six months after your planned return date.

Lodging at Christmas Island Outfitters

Christmas Island Outfitters is a small operation taking a maximum of twelve anglers per week. Starting in 2019 they moved their lodging facilities from Crystal Beach to the newly opened Sunset Horizon Fishing Lodge. The lodge is located just north of the main village of London and a very short drive...

(3 minutes) to the boat harbor, providing much better access to the outriggers for daily fishing excursions into the lagoon. Sunset Horizon also sits on the beach on the ocean side of the island, with spectacular ocean views and sunsets. Sunset Horizon has full time power and good access to WiFi (for a fee).

Accommodations are rustic, simple, and non-luxurious. Each room is configured to house two anglers and has a private bathroom. Rooms are very simple, relatively rustic but kept clean and features ample space for your gear. all units do have A/C. Your room will be cleaned and restocked with soda, water and beer every day during your stay. Each unit is equipped with screened windows, fans, a small refrigerator, and simple plastic table and chairs. Meals are basic and typically focus on fresh seafood (snapper, tuna & wahoo, lobster, mantis shrimp), chicken, pork, rice, pasta and sometimes steak. Fresh vegetables and fruit are very hard to keep in supply.

There is nothing fancy or luxurious about Christmas Island. Accommodations are very simple and provide a clean, comfortable space to lay your head at night. As you drift off to a restorative sleep each night, you'll listen to the sound of waves crashing on the reef and dream of the next greedy bonefish or cruising trevally to attack your fly. Anglers should think of the facility as a "fish camp" built for one purpose, to provide a functional base camp by which to explore some of the most productive, beautiful and remote flats found anywhere in the world.

Your guide will know which flat is most likely to turn on with a given tidal condition and which flats traditionally hold the bigger fish. One of the keys to seeing and catching fish at Christmas Island is being on the right part of the right flat with the right tide. Remember that you are more likely to see bigger fish at the highest tide and in thigh-to waist-deep water. You will catch much smaller fish in ankle-deep water.

Lunch is prepared for you each day and your guide/vehicle driver then packs it in a cooler with ice water and puts it in the vehicle. If you wish to take soft drinks, bottled water or beer, they can be taken from your in-room refrigerator and you will be billed accordingly. After lunch, the rest of the afternoon is spent fishing the various flats.

What Makes This Destination Special and Unique?

•Christmas Island is one of the most prolific bonefish destinations on the planet. The protected lagoon provides ideal habitat to provide unbelievable populations of bonefish. It is one of the few places in the world where anglers of any skill level can expect multiple shots at good numbers of bonefish, every day.

•Fishing on Christmas Island is done the way it should be – on foot. This is the largest coral atoll in the world, and the lagoon is loaded with miles upon miles of fishable water, and there are additional miles of Oceanside reef flats as well. Fly fishers spend the entire day stalking bonefish (or other species) on solid, white-bottomed flats that often stretch as far as the eye can see.

•Christmas Island is one of the few destinations in the world that features consistent, reliable conditions and great fishing year round. Located a mere 120 miles north of the equator in a part of the Pacific Ocean that has never been hit by a hurricane, every month of the year provides consistent temperatures and weather conditions. There is no bad time of year to visit, and you can find great fishing whenever you have the time to go.

•In addition to the great bonefishing, there are many other exciting fish species you can target on Christmas Island. The atoll is home to several different species of Trevally, including the notorious Giant Trevally, beautiful and powerful Bluefin Trevally, and rare Golden Trevally. Tailing triggerfish have become a favorite target species for many Christmas Island regulars. Add in sweetlips, milkfish, parrotfish, goatfish, snapper, and offshore species such as tuna and wahoo, and the opportunities abound to put a bend on the end of your rod with many different beautiful, hard-fishing fish.
