Getting to Akuani River Lodge

All Akuani River Lodge trips start in Bogotá . There are a few different travel options to consider when flying to Bogotá International Airport, (BOG) in Colombia. There are daily flights from Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, JFK, Dallas/Ft Worth, Washington Dulles, and Newark to Bogota.

Once in Bogotá a representative of Afloat will pick you up and transfer you to the Hilton Garden Inn Bogota Airport. The transfer driver will deliver you to the hotel, your bags will be moved inside, and an English-speaking receptionist will check you in. Afloat provides two nights in double accommodations, the night before the flight to Puerto Inírida and the night you arrive from camp back to Bogotá.

The following morning, you’ll be met by your Bogotá host, who will ride in the shuttle with you and your group of anglers to the airport, assist in all luggage transfers, and be certain that you are ready to board the flight to Puerto Inírida, a 90-minute flight. Once you arrive, another Afloat representative will be waiting for you at the airport. He will drive you in a Tuk Tuk (a three-wheeled open-air vehicle) for a 10-minute drive to the river, where you will take a four-hour speed boat ride to Akuani River Lodge. Fishing at Akuani River Lodge

You will spend 6 full days fishing two distinct fisheries the Vichada River and the main Orinoco River. Four full days of guided fishing at Akuani River lodge for Peacock bass and two full days of guided fishing at the Rio Orinoco out-camp for Payara.

The Vichada River is a tributary of the Orinoco and has many lagoons and is a blackwater river (a slow-moving channel flowing through forested swamps or wetlands). You'll find plenty of topwater action and monster temensis (three-bar) peacock bass reaching over 22-pounds. The Vichada is a tributary of the Orinoco.

Perfectly pairing with hunting big peacocks is targeting the large numbers of Butterfly and Royal peacocks. These fish like to gather in schools and are ferocious feeders and very aggressive. Anglers can expect to catch these two species with both subsurface and surface flies aggressively fished over shallow water sholes, sand flats and lagunas. Boat runs are anywhere from 10-15 minutes to 1.5 hours up river.

Downstream of the Lodge is where the Vichada tributary joins the Orinoco, and skiffs will turn down stream to Maipures Rapids. This is where the majority of the Payara fishing takes place and is not to be missed. On the Orinoco, the Bongos are used to get around the rapids. Most of the fishing is done off the rocks on foot.

The Orinoco River is one of the longest rivers in South America, flowing in a giant arc for close to 1,400 miles. The river is considered the fourth largest in the world in terms of discharge volume. You'll fish the Maipures Rapids for 20+ pound payara (vampire fish) in strong currents. On the Orinoco, giant sardinata, resembling an American shad (but much larger), go after small poppers, jigs, spinners, and flies. Use bait to target redtail and shovelnose fish (the ones with distinctive stripes). The Maipures Rapids in Tuparro National Reserve were called the Eighth Wonder of the World by German explorer Alexander von Humboldt and is home to 74 species of mammals, 320 bird species, and many other critters. Pumas, jaguars, and anacondas inhabit the woodlands.
