This is an extremely remote riverside lodge, the only land-based operation on the Mulchatna River, located in the heart of the Bristol Bay watershed supporting the largest sockeye and king salmon runs in the world, along with silver and chum salmon, wild rainbow trout, arctic char, dolly varden, arctic grayling, and northern pike.

A short jet-boat ride from the will get you to water teeming with bright silvers and plenty of wild rainbow trout arctic grayling and both arctic char and dolly varden, water that is easily waded and fished. It is Alaska the way most anglers imagine it to be – a wide, shallow, clear river, flowing through alternating tundra and forest, teeming with wildlife and loaded with fish.

The silvers here often seem limitless, and are very aggressive. For anglers who want to target rainbow trout, there are two smaller tributary streams that have resident trout, as well as sea-run dollies, char and salmon.

The water here is smallish, loaded with fish (often lying behind spawning salmon), and is a fun way to break up a day of catching a lot of big, strong salmon. Perhaps best of all, you almost always have the entire river and all of the tributaries to yourself, as there is little to no outside pressure here. Even in Alaska, that is getting tough to find in this day and age!

To sum it up, this is a wonderful Alaska wilderness trip on a great fly fishing river. It is a comfortable, casual operation with a staff that goes out of their way to exceed your trip expectations. The lodge is modest, comfortable, and features full bathrooms,  hot water showers and excellent cuisine – the owner is a chef and foodie…
