La Ventana in Baja California Sur, Mexico

Located in the East Cape region of southern Baja, cradled between the Sea of Cortez and the Laguna Mountains, La Ventana is a fly fishing getaway to one of the finest fisheries on the planet. The Sea of Cortez has some of the world’s greatest oceanographic extremes. Less than 150 miles in width and up to 14,000 feet in depth, the typically calm waters of the Sea of Cortez often look more like a lake than an ocean. Black and striped marlin, sailfish, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish, dorado and many other species frequent the waters, and fishing for these species often begins just off the beach.

This is a beautiful beachfront location, with a private pool, pristine beaches, and warm clear waters. With the sunrise over the Sea of Cortez and Isla Ceralvo on the horizon, you’ll be living a rich Baja experience.

Seasons Details

As with most of the Sea of Cortez, the water temperature on the East Cape changes substantially over the course of the year, and water temperature determines which fish will be available. Wind is another factor that affects the fishing, with strong north winds often ripping down the coast during the winter months.

The water temperature typically moves into the seventies by March, and the north winds of winter begin to subside. During March and April, striped marlin, dorado and roosterfish begin their migration into the waters of the East Cape as the waters warm, along with the mackerel, mullet and herring that they feed on. Moving into May June the water pushes into the eighties, with sailfish and yellowfin tuna added to the list of available species. Summer fishing is consistent with a wide variety of available species, stable water and air temperatures, and the occasional tropical weather disturbance.

Getting There Details

The international airport in San Jose Del Cabo receives numerous daily flights from many U.S. cities, often a convenient non-stop flight. Another option is to fly into La Paz, with direct flights from Los Angeles. The drive from San Jose Del Cabo is approximately 2.5 hours, and it’s about an hour from the airport La Paz to the villa. The airport transfers are included in your package price.

A Day at La Ventana:
The day starts early on the East Cape. Coffee is ready at five, and a continental breakfast is served at five thirty. Shortly after six you’ll be topping off your insulated lunch bag with your favorite snacks and loading the vehicles. The drive to the boat launch takes approximately thirty minutes, putting you on the water before seven. You’ll return to shore in the afternoon, and the vehicles head back to the beach house. You have the option of relaxing around the pool, or continuing your fishing day by stalking fish from the beach. Your hosts will be happy to drive you to productive fishing areas, and you can fish all afternoon if you wish. Appetizers are ready at five, a perfect time to find some shade and a cool drink. Dinner is served at six, beginning with garden salads and fresh ceviche, followed by an exquisite dinner and dessert.

Angling Details

The East Cape is one of the most productive beach and blue water fly fishing areas in the world. Gentle seas, fair weather, a precipitous drop of the ocean floor, plus an incredible number of migrating pelagic and resident species make this a perfect setting for fly fishing. Fishing can be excellent year-round, but the best action and conditions for fly fishing typically comes in the late spring and early summer. During these months, fair weather settles into the area, and an abundance of baitfish attracts migrating species including roosterfish, jacks, dorado, billfish, tuna, and wahoo.

Dorado and roosterfish tend to be the predominant target species for fly fisherman on the East Cape. During May and the beginning of June, large roosterfish migrate into the area and will aggressively take a well-placed fly. Roosterfish possess exceptional eyesight and incredible acceleration, making them a challenge to hook and land. This is also prime time to fish for dorado, with large fish exceeding fifty pounds. A fierce take and acrobatic displays make the dorado one of fly fishing’s top saltwater sport fish.

Though dorado and roosterfish are super popular species, there are numerous other exciting fish to target. Striped marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, skipjack, bonito, jack crevalle, and pargo are some of the other fish that are available. Fishing from the beach can provide some excellent opportunities. Jacks, roosterfish, sierra mackerel, ladyfish, and pompano cruise the shore looking to corral bait fish into the sandy shallows. Whether you are fishing from the boat or walking the beach, La Ventana offers a wonderful variety of species and fishing opportunities.
