Fishing Report – Week #9
October 13 – 20, 2024
As the sun rose over Rio Marié, so did the anticipation of the anglers, knowing they were in the presence of the world’s largest peacock bass. This is the epitome of the trophy-hunting experience, reserved for those who seek not just adventure, but the pinnacle of jungle fly-fishing. Despite a slow start due to low water levels and super warm temps, anglers quickly adapted, finding their rhythm and pushing their limits against the river’s giants.
The exclusivity of the Rio Marié experience is defined not only by its remote beauty but also by the unparalleled battles it offers—where 4 broken fly lines and 5 snapped 60lb leaders are all part of earning that coveted photo with a monster Temensis. Anglers persisted, undeterred, and were rewarded with unforgettable catches that left a lasting mark.
Weather Conditions:
The week saw mostly sunny days, ideal for fly-fishing enthusiasts eager to tackle the river’s giants. Daytime temperatures ranged from 28°C to 40°C (82°F to 104°F).
River Conditions:
The water levels continued to drop steadily throughout the week. While this created challenges for the mothership’s navigation, it also meant that prime spots for hunting trophy peacock bass were exposed, setting the stage for an action-packed week.
Fishing Statistics:
Anglers: 12 (11 from the US, 1 from the Czech Republic)
Total Peacock Bass Caught: 248
Temensis Over 10lbs: 10
Temensis Over 15lbs: 7
Temensis Over 20lbs: 7
Temensis Over 80cm (2.6ft): 12
Highlights of the Week:
Ryan, a first-time fly angler, discovered both the challenges and rewards of Rio Marié’s waters. Despite never having picked up a fly rod before, he quickly adapted, with the guidance of skilled local guides. His perseverance paid off when he hooked an impressive 18lb peacock bass—a feat that would be the highlight of any angler’s trip.
But the excitement didn’t end there. In a quiet lagoon, a colossal surface strike on his popper reverberated through the water, signaling one of the largest explosions seen on the Marié. Staying calm, Ryan and his guide carefully played the fish, eventually landing a 91cm (2.98ft) and 24lbs monster peacock bass, setting the bar high for future weeks.
Congratulations to Ryan, whose dedication exemplifies the spirit of Rio Marié, and a special acknowledgment to the Marié guides, whose expertise ensured unforgettable moments.
Looking Ahead:
As we look to the coming weeks, the low water levels should continue to reveal some of the most promising hides for targeting the river’s biggest peacock bass. The excitement is palpable, with anglers already anticipating more thrilling catches as the season progresses. The Rio Marié remains the ultimate stage for those seeking an exclusive and world-class fly-fishing adventure. Stay tuned as the season unfolds—there’s no telling what epic moments await.
