Our local rivers are full of water & fish
The 2019 trout fishing season is off to a terrific start and we expect it to get even better!

THE LAST SATURDAY IN APRIL signaled both the opening of California General Trout Season and the 41st Anniversary of The Fly Shop®. Both were terrific occasions. Our lakes and regional reservoirs are filled to capacity, and when spring blossomed, Mt. Shasta and the high country were covered with just enough snow to keep our rivers and streams flowing strong all summer and our regional lakes and ponds full of cold water. Both farmers and fly fishermen can both look forward to a wonderful year!
The Department of Water Resources is planning to deliver more irrigation water than normal this year, and the Sacramento River tailwater (below Shasta Dam) is expected to remain slightly higher and slightly colder than normal all summer. That’s good news for both trout and fishermen.
As we move into mid-summer, the trout fishing on the Lower Sacramento should remain outstanding and fall fishing ought to be absolutely off the charts!
With Lake Shasta completely full there should be no pressure for additional water from the Trinity drainage and that, too, ought to translate into superb steelhead fishing conditions and greater numbers of fish in what is California’s finest fall and winter steelhead fishery.
Hat Creek and Fall River are primarily fed by a deep underground aquifer, not snow melt, and these two spring creeks should remain in terrific shape all summer. If the early season conditions are any indication, anglers can plan on meeting crystal clear conditions and expect some of the best trout fishing in a decade.
The Pit River and the upper McCloud River are snow- pack dependent and should predictably run low and clear all summer. Fly rodders can plan on unusually good trout fishing by Independence Day and into the fall.
Call us here at The Fly Shop® and we’ll give you up-to- the-minute reports, and get you pointed in exactly the right direction with just what you need!
