Pedrotti Ponds

Pedrotti Ponds is one of The Fly Shop’s latest trophy Bass fisheries, located literally just a stones throw from The Fly Shop®!

On the southern edge of Redding California you can find Pedrotti Ponds. Dave loves rocks, dirt, loaders, dump trucks, dredges and has a certain flare for finding big bass. He’s an industrious, energetic, astute individual who owns the rock quarry where ponds as large a 25 acres and as deep as 40 feet, full of cool water, are loaded with bass, bluegil, and crappie. Fish that are in a way just like him. Fish that are healthy, strong, crafty and in their element. One difference to note, you won’t be able to fool Dave with a frog pattern, jig or worm. Not going to happen.

In the 1940’s, the Pedrotti Ponds area was mined for Gold with huge bucket line dredges that moved millions of tons of gravel creating deep holes that today are irrigated with cold clean water straight from the Lower Sacramento River. Thanks to Dave and the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act, it’s Dave’s job to turn these old gravel pits into wetlands that offer suitable habitat for waterfowl and fish. Dave has done an amazing job.

Today anglers enjoy a pond setting complete with floating aquatic plant life that bass love! Add to that submerged structure that supports a healthy thriving bass fishery and what do we have? Awesome bass fishing!

Pedrotti Ponds can fish well every day of the year for bass ranging from 2 to 8 pounds. The famous top-water action in the lake that peaks from April through October is the most popular time for anglers to cast frogs and poppers for explosive strikes from the lake’s resident bass. Big Bluegill and Crappy are also abundant, more often than not these ancillary fish provide a scrumptious meal for the big, aggressive bass found in Pedrotti’s Ponds.

Pedrotti Ponds offers fishing by the day, per rod.

However, such things can and do happen, and this insurance can provide a means of recourse against non-refundable financial losses.

Seasons at Pedrotti Ponds

Pedrotti Ponds is open to fishing for day anglers every day of the year, with the most popular fishing in the spring, summer and fall. We limit the number of anglers on the ponds to a maximum of 6 anglers, although groups of 2 anglers or more will have the lake to themselves.

March through June:
Springtime produces warmer surface water temperatures at Pedrottis. Just warm the edges of the ponds a few degrees and the bass start moving towards the shallows. It's along the edges of the ponds were anglers find aggressive bass feeding during the spring months. It along these edges of the ponds where streamers, worms, and crayfish patterns can cause you to become very, very happy. Well, happier than you where just a minute ago fishing, and that was pretty happy.

The best of the topwater action usually begins in early April, when frogs, mice, and various poppers fished along the weedbeds can produce ruthless strikes. Subsurface patterns almost always out-produce topwater fly patterns though. We can't resist fishing on the top and watching Pedrotti's barbarian bucket-mouths break-out on the surface to devour our frog patterns and poppers.

July through August:
The summer months are about long hot days and topwater explosions. July and August are the two best months of the year to catch bass on topwater at Wilk’s pond. Fishing early and late is the key to success this time of year, and mornings are usually best. The bigger the frog pattern the better; if you have a hard time throwing it on an 8 weight, it’s probably going to work. Cast, strip and hold on.

September through October:
The topwater fishing will continue into the early fall when the bass begin to focus more on schooling baitfish as they begin to feed to fatten up for the winter months. This is also a great time to throw small bass fry and other baitfish fry patterns that resemble the fry that have hatched the previous spring.

November through February:
The winter months at Pedrotti Ponds may not be considered prime time by most, but that does not mean the bass won't attack a leech pattern stripped through the depths. The fish do in fact feed all winter long, and true bass maniacs can enjoy epic bass fishing even in the dead of winter.
