One of the Worlds’ most sought after fly fishing experiences is Tierra del Fuego's Rio Grande.
Trout here are measured in kilos, not inches, and what makes this marvelous river different than all others is that every cast into its water has the potential to attract a strike from what would be the fish of a lifetime anywhere else.
Reliable scientific data has been collected from a remarkable number of fish and supports claims that don't need exaggeration: The average size of brown trout in the Rio Grande is over nine pounds. One trout in five is over fifteen pounds and one in fifty will be a "puerco del rio" that would tip honest scales between twenty and twenty-five pounds. Those numbers are based on the first 1,574 fish caught in January and February at Estancia Maria Behety in the 2007 season.
Certainly, there are differences from fish to fish, but several studies have been completed
by the University of Montana and Argentina Fisheries that indicate the sea trout of the Rio Grande are 14% to 21% heavier than steelhead or Atlantic salmon of the same Length. And while angling success has some correlation with skills and fishing conditions, most fly rodders on the Rio Grande land between three and six fish every day, and hook twice that many. Consider then, that the odds are extremely high that most guests at one of our lodges will land a trophy fish over twenty pounds sometime during their stay! Of course, that's assuming that the average nine and ten pounders aren't thought of as trophies.
Every serious angler deserves to hook a giant brown trout sometime in their life. On the Rio Grande, it's an everyday experience!
The Fly Shop® first opened the doors to
Estancia Maria Behety Lodge and Estancia Despedida Lodge more than a decade ago. Since then they, along with La Villa de Estancia Maria Behety, have become the most popular and critically acclaimed and successful fly fishing destinations in all of Tierra del Fuego and perhaps the world.
Collectively, The Fly Shop's travel staff has been fishing in Chile and Argentina for more than seventy years. We know the ropes, and can hook you up with the best Patagonia fishing. We led the charge into the great dyer valleys of southernmost Chile in the late 70's and helped establish what are currently the most famous outfitters and lodges in that part of the world. Then, more than a decode ago The Fly Shop® was instrumental in developing what are now the finest lodges on Tierra del Fuego's incomparable Rio Grande.
Hooking up with a big sea run brown is an emotional fishing experience that defies accurate description. These big brown trout are much like Pacific salmon and steelhead, in that they're most active in low light conditions.
La Villa de Estancia Maria Behety is the most deluxe lodge on the Rio Grande. Few angling destinations on earth compare with the sea-run fishing on the Rio Grande. La Villa can accommodate a maximum of six anglers each week.
