Patrick Pendergast - Director of Travel Department
If there were a qualifications list for the job as director of The Fly Shop Travel Department, the resume for that position would read like Pat Pendergast’s biography. He came to The Fly Shop a little more than a dozen years ago in 1996. He first met Mike Michalak, the owner of The Fly Shop, while guiding in Alaska, in 1986.

Whipray Caye is a very small private island located about 10 miles off the coast of Placencia, Belize, Central America.
Owned and operated by Julian Cabral and his American wife Beverly, Whipray Caye Lodge is custom made for serious salt-water fishermen and the independent traveler wanting to step away from everyday stress into a pure and natural world - where the fast pace comes to a splashing halt.
This is a very remote and unspoiled area - one of the few remaining in the Western Hemisphere. With warm smiles and ice cold Belikins at the ready, Julian and Bev make it very easy to unwind and adjust to the slow rhythms of island life.
A charming little island getaway, Whipray (Whippari on some charts) Caye is surrounded by some of the finest permit waters found anywhere as well as an abundance of snorkeling-worthy coral and sea life.
Kick back without your cell phone, laptop or BlackBerry Indeed. Studies show that most Americans don't allow their vacations to get between them and their email. According to research, an estimated 83 percent of us check it at least twice a day while on vacation. And
now that many of the most remote locales from Nepal to Mongolia to Tanzania offer some sort of connectivity, it's hard to escape your inbox.
However, some hotels find that the blurring between work and leisure is the antithesis of their mission to help you unplug. They're taking steps to help you tackle your bad habits by staying unwired by choice.
Off the coast of the Placencia, a fishing village in southern Belize that's becoming a popular vacation destination, the Whipray Caye Lodge attracts anglers who want to forget their lives back home—at least for a few days. Though this private island hideaway caters to a high-end clientele, the lodge is non-wired by design. "Guests come in at the end of the day, have dinner and talk about—fish (what else?)," says Beverly Cabral who co-owns the lodge with her husband Julian, a noted angler. It doesn't take long for guests to get in the groove. "Everyone gets on 'caye time' very quickly: They're up just before dawn… fish all day, eat dinner and go to bed usually well before 9 p.m."
The package prices include everything for your trip from the time you hit the Placencia Airport (PLJ) to the time you return there for your flights home.

The season at Whipray Caye is year around.
Fishing takes its cue from the weather. As long as the weather is good, the fishing is good. Generally speaking, November through February is very good fishing as long as there are blue skies and warm breezes. Northers can blast through this area during our winter time, but the good news is that they rarely last very long and the fishing, when it has blown through, can be outstanding. As the year progresses through March, April, May and early June, the weather and the fishing is getting better and better. The summer means great fishing through to early October, however one must be aware of
hurricane seasons and what they mean to an angler/traveler to this part of Earth. While the fishing is very good, one has to be comfortable knowing that a trip can be blown away by hurricanes. This is actually rare, but it happens. Check out trip insurance and the lodge policy on cancellations due to inclement weather and hurricanes.
Late March through early June are the safest weather-months with very good fishing conditions. Call us and talk this over with us if you have any questions about the seasons and best months to go to Whipray.
Located 11 miles off the coast of Placencia, Belize at GPS coordinates N: 16.° 32' 22.8", W: 88° 13' 03.5", Whipray Caye Lodge is accessible by boat from the Village of Placencia.
All international flights arrive at Goldson International Airport near Belize City. Airport Code is BZE. Flights from the US and Canada are offered by USAirways, Continental Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, TACA Airlines, Northwest Airlines, from the UK, and from Paris via Air France/Delta.
US currency is accepted and appreciated
everywhere. Credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) and travelers checks are accepted at most places. Leave your American Express card at home. You can also get a cash advance on your credit card at the Atlantic Bank ATM machine and inside Scotia Bank in Placencia. It is a good idea to bring small bills with you because you may have a hard time getting change for US$50's and $100's.
Passports are required. No visas are required for U.S. or Canadian citizens.
$40.00US departure tax (cash) per person required when leaving the Belize Int'l Airport.
Lodging on Whipray Caye is built for sustainable tourism: very basic - two double beds in each room, ceiling fans and cross-through ventilation from windows on every outside wall, clear and natural rainwater fit for drinking or a nice warm shower on those rare chilly days, with 12v and generator-supplied current in every room- that's the fun of island life. Clear clean waters sparkle with sunlight right outside your door, as you lie in bed watching the incredible Belizean sunrise.
2 unique 2-room cabanas (private entry and bathroon for each bedroom), 8 full-size beds total, are basic and CLEAN. At the end of the day relax before dinner, in a comfortable hammock on your veranda, and enjoy the view of the glorious Caribbean Sea,
contemplating your day with a nice cold Belikin Beer at hand.
We also feature the famous Sea Urchin Bar and Restaurant, one of the most unique in the entire area! The kitchen serves up a variety of Belizean and American food, mostly served fresh from the sea, and the fully stocked bar serves the coldest beer for miles around, all enjoyed under the thatched roof and open to the cooling breezes so you can view spectacular sunsets as you eat. Meals are all served Family Style and are fixed price. Call ahead or email for reservations if you are not a guest on the caye. We love to see the sailing boats tied up to our 2 mooring buoys on the west side of the caye.
This is your classic permit setting for those who love to wade to their fish. Your guide will pole you along the pristine flats until fish are spotted. You'll then be asked to quietly slip out of the boat and slowly wade toward the fish to get the best possible shot at them.
Julian is one of Belize's top permit guides, and as such is a great source of information about the area. Having Julian around makes fishing out of Whipray an experience you will never forget. The permit fishing is excellent and there are few places that offer better shots at this challenging fish. Several of the permit flats are only a five minute boat ride away from the island.
Julian will take you to spots known only to him, some of the best fishing you will find anywhere. If you want Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish, Yellowtail, Snapper, King Mackerel, Barracuda, or Grouper, they are all here. Check here for a complete, as complete a list as grown-ups toys could be, list of gear to start your adventure.
Whipray Caye can accommodate up to eight rods at a time, which makes it ideal for small groups looking for a unique and intimate setting. The cabanas, while basic, are comfortable. Don't expect posh because it isn't here. Fishing is. Hammocks on the veranda invite weary anglers to stop and rest while offering the perfect place to watch the sun set on another day in Permit Paradise.
