Patrick Pendergast - Director of Travel Department
If there were a qualifications list for the job as director of The Fly Shop Travel Department, the resume for that position would read like Pat Pendergast’s biography. He came to The Fly Shop a little more than a dozen years ago in 1996. He first met Mike Michalak, the owner of The Fly Shop, while guiding in Alaska, in 1986.

The Fly Shop's® "Learning From the Masters" Series

Trout Tactics with Skip Morris & Rick Hafele at Antelope Creek Lodge

The Fly Shop® is thrilled to be working with acclaimed authors and anglers Skip Morris and Rick Hafele (see below for their full bios). Skip and Rick are two of the best in the business, and they’re hosting a specialized school program at Antelope Creek Lodge.

Each day’s program will start with delicious breakfast prepared by our own Antelope Creek Lodge staff, followed by a morning program that combines slide shows and classroom presentations with on-the-water, hands on observation and training. Lunch is enjoyed on the Lodge’s deck overlooking slurping trout on Antelope Creek. After the midday break, specific casting and fishing techniques applicable to the morning’s session (such as how to fish a specific type of insect imitation in a specific life phase) will be discussed and demonstrated, then everyone will hit the water and put their newfound expertise to use on the rainbow and brown trout of Antelope Creek Ranch. Fish weary and overwhelmed with knowledge, guests enjoy another memorable meal before sharing stories, asking and answering questions, and picking Skip and Rick’s brains until collapsing,

exhausted and rewarded, to a restful slumber with the sounds of the creek bubbling just outside their window.

Daily seminar topics and techniques to be covered include entomology and fly selection for a variety of aquatic and terrestrial insects, including mayflies, caddis, stoneflies, and midges. We’ll cover both Stillwater and small stream strategies, and work on improving our casting in different fishing situations encountered every day on different types of waters, such as distance casting, accuracy, short casts, roll casts, and presentation casts.

The Trout Tactics program is an exceptional learning opportunity, and a fun-filled weekend for any anglers looking to expand upon their basic knowledge and understanding of fly fishing for trout. You will walk away from this weekend a better, more confident angler.

Trout Tactics Dates:
•  September 13 - 16, 2012

Trout Tactics Rates:

Rick Hafele

Rick caught his first trout on a fly at the age of 12 on a spring creek in Missouri. Trout streams were few and far between near his home in a small farm town in central Illinois, but he continued to fish with flies for bluegills and bass. His interest in fly fishing for trout and aquatic insects fully developed after he moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1969 to attend college in Bellingham, Washington. Since then he has traveled throughout the West and beyond fishing for wild native trout, and collecting and studying the insects upon which they feed.

In 1979 Rick received a Master of Science degree in aquatic entomology from Oregon State University, and has since worked as a professional aquatic biologist for over 30 years, specializing in water quality assessment using aquatic insects. In the course of both my professional work and fly fishing, he has spent more than 40 years observing aquatic insects and fish communities in creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes.

Rick has written articles for scientific journals, and penned the Aquatic Entomology column

for American Angler magazine for over 30 years. Books to my credit include An Angler’s Guide to Aquatic Insects and Their Imitations (with Scott Roederer, Johnson Books, 1995), The Complete Book of Western Hatches (with Dave Hughes, Amato Pub., 1981), Western Mayfly Hatches (with Dave Hughes, Amato Pub. 2005), and most recently Nymph Fishing Rivers and Streams (Stackpole Books, 2006).

He alo has instructed in eight fly fishing DVDs starting with the 1983 Scientific Angler release of Anatomy of a Trout Stream. My most recent DVD, Advanced Tactics for Emergers & Dries, was released by Laughing River Productions in October, 2011 (www.laughingrivers.com). Other DVDs include Nymph Fishing Basics and Advanced Nymph Fishing, and the four-volume set titled, Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers.

Rick is currently a member of the Freshwater Trust, the Native Fish Society of Oregon, the Xerces Society, the Western River Conservancy, and Water Watch, and have been awarded life membership to the Federation of Fly Fishers and the Flyfisher's Club of Oregon for his contributions to fly fishing literature.

2 Day Trout School at Bailey Creek Lodge with Lance and Lincoln Gray

Lance and Lincoln Gray have been fly fishing the lakes and streams of Northern California for over 30 years, and they’re excited to share some of their expertise this summer at our 2 Day Trout School at Bailey Creek Lodge. Bailey Creek Lodge is a perfect facility for this clinic, with access to the trophy trout lake overlooking the scenic Manton Valley to work on Stillwater techniques, and the idyllic Bailey Creek meandering just past the back porch of the lodge for fine tuning moving water techniques as well.

The Trout School is a 3 day, 2 night school, beginning with a 3:00 pm arrival on Friday and concluding with lunch on Sunday. The program is combination of freestone stream and stillwater instruction, designed for novice to intermediate anglers. Each student will learn proper casting techniques, and instruction on rods, reels, fly lines, knots, leaders, flies, wading and pontoon boat/ float tubes. Students will also rig rods for each fishing situation and will be able to determine what setup will be needed during the school.

The stillwater segment focuses on the use of floating line an intermediate line techniques. We will also cover lake profiling, positioning watercraft to make the cast, and variant retrieves and the countdown method for sinking lines. Our attention for Freestone streams will be wading into position to cast, wading safety, rod setups , casting applications (including roll cast and presentation casts), and creating a perfect dead drift. Opportunities will abound to practice hooking, fighting, landing, and releasing fish!

After attending the course the student will be able to fish on their own in a safe, confident and productive manner.

2 Day Trout School Dates:
•  June 8 - 10, 2012

2 Day Trout School Rates:
•  $825 per person (double occupancy)
•  $1,050 per person (single occupancy)

2 Day Stillwater Clinic at Luk Lake with Lance and Lincoln Gray

It was a simple, logical decision to combine the phenomenal winter and spring fishing at our easily-accessed Luk Lake in Corning with the decades of experience of local talent Lance and Lincoln Gray, along with The Fly Shop's® experienced guide staff. The end result is our 2 Day Stillwater Clinic at Luk Lake scheduled for the spring time, when fishing on the lake can be fantastic, both for tropy-sized rainbow trout and a host of aggressive bass that call the lake their home.

Luk Lake is a 65+ acre lake conveniently located just minutes from Interstate 5 in Corning, California, behind the Rolling Hills Casino. The lake is loaded with bass, sunfish and stocked with monster rainbows, providing an excellent setting for a Stillwater school.

The Stillwater Clinic at Luk Lake is conducted by seasoned guides who are able to cater every aspect of the class to anglers of all skill levels. Guests at the Stillwater Clinic will learn not only the basic skills important in successful fly

fishing in lakes, but also more advanced techniques including casting instruction, reading structure (the water) in lakes, sinking line methods (countdown techniques), boat positions, proper set ups and fly selection.

While the focus of this school is on fly fishing for trout in lakes and Stillwaters, Luk Lake also has healthy populations of largemouth bas and sunfish, so techniques for targeting these warmwater species can also be covered, and many of our Luk Lake angling guests land some hard-fighting bass while fishing for the lake's trophy rainbows.

Lunch will be provided each day during the class, and the nearby Rolling Hills Casino provides some great options for lodging and meals.

2 Day Stillwater Clinic Dates:
•  March 17 - 18, 2012

2 Day Stillwater Clinic Rates:
•  $600 per person

Lance & Lincoln Gray:

Lincoln Gray has been fly fishing for 34 years. The passion for the sport began early, with his father and brother learning the sport on the well-known Rogue River in Southern Oregon. Lincoln continues that passion; with his Stillwater Fly Fishing Adventures business that includes schools and guided trips. Lincoln lives in Chico, California and has fished the rivers and lakes of Northern California for the past 25 years. Lincoln is a well-known instructor, guide, writer and fly tier. Several of his Hexagenia designs were featured in the Summer 2008 issue of Fly Tyer Magazine. Lincoln also works as a manager for Sierra Stream & Mountain, a company that includes Sierra Stream Fly Shop, Tie-Fast Tools and Jay Fair Eagle Fly Fishing. Lincoln is a pro-staff member of Ross Reels, TFO Fly Rods, Cortland Line Company, Jay Fair Eagle Fly Fishing and Peak Fly Fishing.

Lance Gray started fly fishing with his father and brother Lincoln, on the famous Rogue River at the age of 7. In his teens, he began tying flies commercially for shops all

around Northern California, including The Fly Shop®. At 17, he went to work at Powell's in Chico, working in the fly shop and building rods. He guided for Powell’s, conducted fly-tying and fly-fishing schools, and traveled. In 1993, Lance started Saltwater Innovations, a company that manufactured and distributed products for saltwater fly fishing. Lance’s Crystal Popper, Gray’s Billfish Fly, the KO Charlie line and the Raghead Crabs are all Saltwater Innovations products. In 2003 Lance launched Lance Gray & Company, a full-service guiding company that offers guided trips, fly-fishing schools, workshops and a travel insight. Lance conducts presentations at fly clubs and outdoor shows and supports local groups like Cub Scouts and 4H. He's a signature tyer for Solitude Fly Company and recently entered the world of writing, with articles published in Angling Trade Magazine, California Fly Fisher, Sierra Fisherman, Northwest Fly Fishing, and Fly Fisherman. He is on the pro staff with Sage, Rio and Fishcraft Driftboat Company.
