| The Yuba River
The Yuba River
is one of the closest blue ribbon trout fisheries to the San Francisco
Bay Area and Sacramento. A year round fishery, the Yuba offers
opportunities to fly fish for rainbow trout throughout the year.
It is known for its incredible hatches and hard fighting wild rainbow
trout.
Although the Yuba
River has healthy numbers of resident Trout and Steelhead throughout
the year, the often inconsistent flows and conditions make
spring the best time of the year to target fish on dry flies. This
is when our fly fishing guides focus their attention on the Yuba,
from mid-February through April. Dry fly fishing is at its finest,
and anglers enjoy opportunities throughout the day of sight casting
to rising fish.

Fly Fishing on the Yuba
Starting around
the middle of February, Skwala Stoneflies start their annual
migration towards the Yuba River's gravel-lined shores, driving
the Trout crazy for the huge food source. As the Skwalas slowly
start to wind down in early March, they are replaced by another
large and scrumptious aquatic insect: the March Brown Mayfly provides
great top-water action from March through April. Amongst these two
main hatches, minor hatches of PMD's, Baetis, and Caddis hatch throughout
the spring, often affording sporadic feeding flurries from hungry
trout.
In addition to
the fantastic dry fly fishing, the Yuba is famed for its strong,
hard-fighting fish. Many of these wild Rainbow Trout exhibit
frequent reel-burning runs and red-sided aerial displays. Each and
every one of these fish, especially when taken on a dry fly, will
erase all memories of "the one that got away."
