Wilk’s Pond

Our new 22-acre largemouth bass factory is just a few hundred feet from the Sacramento River and only twenty minutes from The Fly Shop®.  It’s a great way to fill a morning or afternoon and make the most of your holiday visit to the Redding area, and a fresh alternative to the local trout fishing.

Wilk’s Pond habitat provides a near-perfect environment for bass, bluegill, and crappie.  The edges of the pond are lined with overhanging trees, and bushes, and cover just screams lunker largemouth.

The entire lake is loaded with fish.  During the spring and mid-summer large bucketmouths cruise the shade and lie below the lily pads, ready to ambush anything that comes in range.  There’s enough heart-stopping top water action from April through November to keep even the most demanding angler entertained.

Wilk’s Pond is a hard-to-believe getaway.  Easy-to-get-to, but far enough from town to provide seclusion.  And with a constant parade of riparian wildlife and birdlife.  Eagles, osprey, deer, beavers, wild turkeys, and other woodland critters are routine visitors.

Weed growth is kept to a minimum with a supply of fresh, cool water percolating into the fishery from the nearby Lower Sacramento River, and the small, lakeside cabin is a swell spot to relax for lunch, get out of the weather or take a break from the action.

This place is more than just a terrific bass fishery.  Wilk’s Pond is a wonderful, nearby woodland retreat and the perfect place to spend a spring, summer, or fall day with your kids, family, or a couple of friends.  Too, it’s a way to add on some great fishing and make the most of your limited vacation time in the area.

However, such things can and do happen, and this insurance can provide a means of recourse against non-refundable financial losses.

Seasons at Wilk's Pond

Wilk's Pond is open to fishing for day anglers every day of the year, with the most popular fishing in the spring, summer and fall. We limit the number of anglers on the pond to a maximum of 6 anglers, although groups of 2 anglers or more will have the pond to themselves.

March through June:
The first warm afternoons of early March signal the beginning of the pre-spawn period for the bass in Wilk’s pond. This is the time to get the big girls as the chow down to pack on the calories to carry them through the spawn. This is the time to throw the biggest bugs in your box, usually baitfish patterns, on sinking lines to target those big fish moving up from the winter haunts. There can be some good topwater action in the early spring, too, as bass will attack anything that may be a threat to spawning areas.

Once the spawn begins sight fishing for bedding bass is a ton of fun and a great way to see all the big fish that live in the pond.

The post spawn period brings some tougher fishing, usually in late May through sometime in June, but even then it is hard to go a few casts without an electrifying strike from an angry bass.

July through August:
The summer months are about long hot days and topwater explosions. July and August are the two best months of the year to catch bass on topwater at Wilk’s pond. Fishing early and late is the key to success this time of year, and mornings are usually best. The bigger the frog pattern the better; if you have a hard time throwing it on an 8 weight, it’s probably going to work. Cast, strip and hold on.

September through October:
The topwater fishing will continue into the early fall when the bass begin to focus more on schooling baitfish as they begin to feed to fatten up for the winter months. This is also a great time to throw small bass fry and other baitfish fry patterns that resemble the fry that have hatched the previous spring.

November through February:
Winter time at Wilk’s pond may not be considered prime time by most, but that does not mean the bass won't attack a leech pattern stripped through the depths or a float n fly suspended beneath an indicator. The fish do in fact feed all winter long, and true bass maniacs can enjoy some great technical bass fishing even in the dead of winter.
