TROUT HAVE NOT BEEN STOCKED herefor close to a hundred years and the fish have found their own natural balance in numbers and sizes. You will catch lots of wild and strong fish within the 12 to 20-inch range. Fish over twenty inches are caught almost daily, over twenty-four inches weekly. The lodge records for both brown and rainbow trout is 32 inches!
Anglers spend each day floating a new stretch of water, each one with its own unique flavor. Some will be smaller streams, with fishermen throwing large foam terrestrials into bankside slots and pocket water; others large rivers where huge trout chase baitfish patterns; and for those want to maximize their chances at a true trophy, guides will access a series of hidden lakes and lagunas where huge, copper-tinted browns cruise shallows looking for their next meal. The emphasis is nearly always on fishing huge dry flies, or dry-and-dropper rigs, and it is not
unusual to hook a lot of fish in a day’s
float.
THE SPIRIT OF OUTDOOR adventureinevery angler will definitely be satiated with Patagonian BaseCamp’s two optional out-camps; one on the Palena and another on the Figueroa. Fishermen and their guides arrive at each camp- site at the end of a full day of fishing and float- ing through remote river canyons that most natives to the region have never seen.
These four person, permanent bivouacs are perched on isolated riverbanks and surrounded by dense bamboo, beech and fuchsia forest. The combination of true wilderness fishing and com- fortable overnight lodging is even more remark- able in this remote corner of the world. The view of the river is spectacular from the dining room and lounge deck of these unique, and uber-com- fortable camps. After a cold beer or glass of fine wine, a spectacular dinner, and a good night’s sleep in real beds (and the luxury of hot showers and flush toilets), guests rise at their leisure the next morning, and continue their float through an equally inaccessible stretch of river, catching big browns until they reach the distant take-out point.
